"it's chicken to be a realist" - this is daring greatly
There is constant "bike helmet" talk in our house. Steve and I are both bike lovers, the kids ride their bikes and scooters all of the time, and Steve does triathalons (this community is buzzing about this).
And, did I mention that Steve's a pediatrician? He's not a helmet-optional kinda guy.
We hate helmets. We love them. We wear them, but we don't like it.
I'm so grateful for these women and their total DARING! Take a look. I cried at the end.

BUT WOW.. I LOVED IT. What a fabulous idea...can't wait to see it in production. Love the "outside the box thinking" and of course the daring greatly!!
Call me seriously impressed.
Thanks for posting this Brené~!

I will use this at my next board meeting of the solace governors. (We always start with inspiration.)
cheers,
Liv
Hey Brene, I look forward to seeing you on your book tour in California the 22nd of Sept. I will have my preordered book in hand...yeah!
Wholeheartedly,

*Hate to have it go off accidentally, they don't supply a fail percentage, just that it is triggered by abnormal movement in an accident.
*Runs on Battery - you could get stuck somewhere without a helmet
*Quite expensive and you need to buy a new one after activation - I've seen riders fall off a bike without a scratch to a conventional helmet.
I was wondering, have you ever considered getting some of your work, like your books, translated into another language?
I live in a predominantly hispanic neighborhood. The family next door: all they do is scream and yell at the kids and the parents use shame and guilt to control their brood. And so while debating what would happen if I called DCFS, I thought, "God, we literate people with english as a native language are SO lucky! We have EVERYTHING translated into English and we didn't even do anything to make it happen." As far as Spanish goes, there are a HUGE majority of hispanics and migrant Mexican families settling in the U.S., and from what I see of their television and their radio programs, it's all corporate crap. In my own words "they're a poor, exploitable labor class who can be easily controlled through lack of quality information and media choices."
Frederick Douglass: “The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes, and in a strange land reduced us to slavery. I loathed them as being the meanest as well as the most wicked of men. As I read and contemplated the subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish. As I writhed under it, I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. it opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. in moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity. I have often wished myself a beast. I preferred the condition of the meanest reptile to my own. Any thing, no matter what, to get rid of thinking! It was this everlasting thinking of my condition that tormented me. There was no getting rid of it. It was pressed upon me by every object within sight or hearing, animate or inanimate. The silver trump of freedom had roused my soul to eternal wakefulness. Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more forever. It was heard in every sound and seen in every thing. It was ever present to torment me with a sense of my wretched condition. I saw nothing without seeing it, I heard nothing without hearing it, and felt nothing without feeling it. It looked from every star, it smiled in every calm, breathed in every wind, and moved in every storm.”
When all you have is corporate trash media, your mind is very much imprisoned. I feel your work translated and propagated in other languages would be a great benefit to all those whose native language is other than English.
I love the blog; Hope this finds you well. Bye!
No rooster required. Um, ya! On board with that, too! Love, love this!
"If it is impossible, then we'll just have to prove them wrong."...absolutely priceless.
As an ultra-distance cyclist I have often desired some way to protect what little grey matter I have, but no matter the helmet (and I've tired dozens) my head still feels like it has been pressure cooked during the summer months. This is completely awesome.
Bless these girls...they have done a tremendous service to all of us on so many levels.
Be encouraged!
While in Copenhagen I have been researching for a post to blog related to my experience of the Danish idea of "hyggelig" including biking with the Danes when I too came across these same amazing women. Now I as take the time to "research" (lol) you, I find you have found them too! I adore synchronicity. (per LGB TED, also any woman who proudly wears clogs publicly, automatically I know gets it, too!)
Along these same lines I thought you and your readers might enjoy this TEDx CPH:

Consistently Danish people rank as some of the happiest in the world when surveyed. I believe this is in part because of the successful illusion that their government will absolutely provide for the emergency meeting of the lower Maslow needs should things go awry in their lives. This gives them a perceived breathing room to live without some basic fears that we in the USA have whole heartedly bought into. In Denmark it is like having a big daddy instead of big brother, as really it is their own massive tax contributions that are helping themselves! Very interesting dynamic to observe and experience as an American with Danish roots.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your shares. Thank you for doing your personal work, walking the talk and then having the courage to share what you have found on your journey...our journey.
If you ever are on one of my flights finding yourself mid anxiety moment (as I too do not dose or drink either), I would love to invite you to join me in the back galley for a cup of tea, gracefully served from the little Japanese pot I fly with.
Healthy & Happy Life Flying,
Maren

Also. No way would I trust something that has to function mechanically BEFORE my head is protected. You only get one chance in an accident. If the inflation mechanism fails, you're dead or paralyzed - there's no going back to the manufacturer for a refund and a do-over. As there is no such thing as a perfect product, there is going to be some percentage of function failure with this item. Do you really want to be part of that percentage? Neither do I.
This product seems to be based more on vanity and fashion sense than anything, and the price puts it well beyond the budget of most "urban bikers". I live in NY, where most "urban bikers" are delivery people, working for minimum wage.
If you're going to ride a bicycle or a motorcycle, just wear a helmet and proper protective clothing. It's that simple.
