"Whoa. This is big, big, big. Somebody ring some bells!"

© Harpo, Inc 2013 | George Burns

Super Soul Sunday airs this Sunday! I can hardly believe it.

I have to be honest and tell you that I was scared to death. Not excited/scared, just scared/scared. When we pulled into the parking garage at Harpo - the garage that was so familiar because I've seen it a million times on TV -  I had this overwhelming urge to play it cool. No big deal. I'm fine. Whatever.

Thankfully, I know myself well enough to know that "cool" is one of my favorite pieces of vulnerability armor. So, during a calmer moment the day before the taping I actually wrote my own permission slip and stuck it in my pocket. It simply said:

I give you permission to be excited and goofy and uncool.
Just show up and be seen.

Well, let me tell you . . . permission granted!

As you'll see - I was giggly and excited and totally uncool. There's this great moment during the show (you can see it here in the online preview)  where Oprah says, "Whoa! This is big, big, big. Somebody ring some bells!" It was one of my favorite moments because I thought, Wow. she's excited too! Let's ring those dang bells!

© Harpo, Inc 2013 | George Burns

The plan was to record a single episode of Super Soul Sunday but there was this crazy, intense connection between us so we filmed two episodes. I didn't have a second outfit - just jeans, cowboy boots, and a black shirt that looked just like the one I was wearing. Oprah said, "No problem. Wear your jeans and cowboy boots and borrow one of my shirts." I actually said, "Shut. Up. No. Way." Permission to be 14 years old granted.

I'll let you know as soon as we have the dates for the second episode.

I've never watched myself on video. I haven't even seen the TED talks. But, on Sunday I'm going to watch and live-Tweet the show with Oprah. Join us! I'm @brenebrown and she's @Oprah. You can also follow tweets at @SuperSoulSunday.

I invited some friends and family over and we're going to do brunch and watch. I'm going to write myself another note. This time it will say, Be supportive and kind to yourself. I think I look weird - I'm way more gussied up than normal. I'm sure I'll think of one thousand ways I could have been wiser or wittier. I'll be embarrassed about my gushing.

But you know what? I dared greatly and I can't wait to share it with all of you. This community is what I think about when I'm trying to be brave. So, join us! Host your own brunch - OWN has a great kit here. It even includes the tough Soul-to-Soul questions that Oprah asked me.

There's also a worldwide simulcast - you can get more info here.

Permission to ring bells granted!

So excited for you, Brene, and well deserved. I love that you wrote yourself permission notes. It's worked wonders with one of my kids, my son who ruminates and way over worries about things. Every time I walk into his room I see the "permission to fail" note I wrote for him, still hanging on his wall a couple of years later.

Giggling with Oprah, what more can one ask for! Just reading about your excitment makes me already smile. The quote Ring those dang bells probably will start a life of its own! :))

For those who might not have seen The art of asking, tedtalk of Amanda Palmer, she showed her vulnerability and trust big time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMj_P_6H69g

Enjoy!

Very cool! Congratulations. Loved your reaction to borrowing Oprah's shirt. I also love the permission notes. That's definitely something I need to remember for future stressful situations.

So happy to see you there. Looking forward to see the episode. Love your idea of permission note. I have been doing that recently whenever I catch myself being too critical to myself with the note ," I am enough, right here , right now". I cant agree more with you about this community to show up and share our vulnerability and practice courage. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday .

This is awesome! I can't wait to see you two together... two strong, authentic, articulate women who speak what my heart yearns to hear!

I hope you watch yourself then dance and sing out loud.

Brene, loved hearing you recently at Furman! Can't wait to watch on Sunday! PS I think if we lived next door to each other we'd be good friends. You inspire me!

I'm so excited for you that you let yourself be giddy and enjoy yourself so much! You look so RADIANT, just beaming with happiness! I got tears in my eyes and chills all over when I watched just the little preview! I can't wait to watch the whole thing. You and your work have changed my life!!!
03.12.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea
So excited for you and so glad that more people will be exposed to your research and books. Love the permission slip idea - we all-too-often think we have to "play it cool" in order to succeed. But the truth is most of us would be giddy and complete fools with Oprah, and that's okay! =) I can't wait to see it!
You made me all teary, Breneé. This is so exciting. I've never participated in a twitter event and I'm not sure I can keep up, but I'm going to try for this.
03.12.2013 | Unregistered CommenterEileen
Your authenticity and vulnerability make me smile from the inside out! I also feel teary, a sense of deep joy. Thank you for all that you are bringing to the conversation about living a whole hearted life. And... I want to be 14 and be your friend!!!

I know just the feeling. In Birmingham, my favorite author came to speak a few weeks ago and in the very moment when I was to have my picture with her...I managed to fall ...in.front.of.her....while being so very excited to be next to her....does this story sound familiar...you were playing the part of the "most favorite author"....and I loved you for not laughing. xo....we are thankful for your success and so proud for your daring greatly!
much love,

Sweetie Berry

First of all, I have to say, love the shoes you wore! Awesome "pop" of color. Now secondly, and more importantly, I cannot wait to see your episode of Super Soul Sunday! After reading "Daring Greatly" I thought, Oprah needs to interview Brene. I am so happy she thought so too! Your work is life changing and I applaud this amazing opportunity to reach so many more people with it. Thank you for showing up and being seen!

What a wonderful post! How exciting for you...for both Oprah the Icon reasons, and Oprah the new friend reasons. While unbridled enthusiasm has its detractors (I've been made fun of for YEARS for mine), it feels so good to just let it out, doesn't it? I call it Pollyanna Power...it takes some chutzpah, but usually my detractors come around. Some even admit that their jaded response is armor to protect them against vulnerability.
03.12.2013 | Unregistered CommenterAsha Dornfest
YaY Brene!!! Two episodes?...OF COURSE y'all are Soul Sisters! Well deserved! Watching your TED talk, and reading your books, and SEEING you continue to put your message and yourself out there...makes ME want to dare greatly! This cracks me up because I gave myself to be excited & goofy & uncool when I met you :) Now look atcha! My two imaginary BFFs sharing the same stage! haha Don't stop believin'~ you have a small army of loving supporters cheering you on!

Brene, I am wildly proud of you. You are kindred spirits with the Oprah?? And you wore her clothes?? Yeah, I would have been having kittens! Permission to be giddily, radiantly, joyously delighted. Delighted! xxxxxxxxxxx

Have a cup-tea and relish in the moment knowing that you are making a difference in people's lives and mostly YOURS!!!, by example. With or without Oprah. Your a missionary for the greater good . Of course you would be on Oprah!
BREATHE . RELAX . FEEL . WATCH . ALLOW and jump for joy in this gleeful moment..

Thank you Brené for having the courage to be your true "you".You are amazing and inspiring to me. Reading Daring Greatly and following your work has changed me and the way I look at myself, my relationships and the world we are in. And I am much better for it! I just can not express how grateful I am for you. I teared up a little reading about you and Oprah, it just felt so real, exciting and good! I'm very much looking forward to seeing you two on Sunday. I am so tremendously proud of you. For your courage, but also in believing in your message and brining it out into the world.

You Rock Brene'!!! So excited for you & I can't wait to watch you and Oprah... That is big, big, big!!!

Your permission to be seen reminds me of one of my favorite poems:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson

You insire us with your courage and vulnerability! :D February

Being cool is so over rated and I stink at it anyway.
Thank you for being silly, excited, scared and nervous.
Now I can do the same and know that it's all good because it looks great on you.

i watched your TED talks and checked out DG from my library last month. there were so many passages i wanted to highlight that i had to return the book and purchase a copy for my OWN library!

friends of mine are going to start a book club soon, so your appearance on SSS will be the perfect teaser!

way to go, Brene! i like the idea of the notes to self you wrote and will write yourself. i'd be goofy too if i met Oprah. you are NOT alone in that!

To me you simple look gorgeous, Brené. Congrats!
You look fabulous!! Love the shoes!!! I can't wait to watch, still have your interview with Katie saved on the DVR and watch it sometimes, when I need a little courage. I am so happy for you and for your success.

Your message is getting out into the world - my middle school age daughter wrote An Ode to Imperfection for her poetry unit assignment. And she's never even read your books!

Celebrate and enjoy!

Yes, dare to live, greatly! I saw you speak at the Life Beyond Cancer's Retreat 3 years ago at Lakeway and have been a fan ever since. What's more, I think I'm the poster girl for daring to live greatly. My precious husband died unexpectedly on Christmas, 2 years ago. Today, at age 63, this Texas girl and her 3 big dogs are moving to NYC to start an e-commerce/online magazine for women over 45, and some of the most well-respected women in fashion & publishing are joining me. I never would have guessed that I could rise from such intense grief to do something this exciting.

Bravo, Brene!
