"Whoa. This is big, big, big. Somebody ring some bells!"

© Harpo, Inc 2013 | George Burns

Super Soul Sunday airs this Sunday! I can hardly believe it.

I have to be honest and tell you that I was scared to death. Not excited/scared, just scared/scared. When we pulled into the parking garage at Harpo - the garage that was so familiar because I've seen it a million times on TV -  I had this overwhelming urge to play it cool. No big deal. I'm fine. Whatever.

Thankfully, I know myself well enough to know that "cool" is one of my favorite pieces of vulnerability armor. So, during a calmer moment the day before the taping I actually wrote my own permission slip and stuck it in my pocket. It simply said:

I give you permission to be excited and goofy and uncool.
Just show up and be seen.

Well, let me tell you . . . permission granted!

As you'll see - I was giggly and excited and totally uncool. There's this great moment during the show (you can see it here in the online preview)  where Oprah says, "Whoa! This is big, big, big. Somebody ring some bells!" It was one of my favorite moments because I thought, Wow. she's excited too! Let's ring those dang bells!

© Harpo, Inc 2013 | George Burns

The plan was to record a single episode of Super Soul Sunday but there was this crazy, intense connection between us so we filmed two episodes. I didn't have a second outfit - just jeans, cowboy boots, and a black shirt that looked just like the one I was wearing. Oprah said, "No problem. Wear your jeans and cowboy boots and borrow one of my shirts." I actually said, "Shut. Up. No. Way." Permission to be 14 years old granted.

I'll let you know as soon as we have the dates for the second episode.

I've never watched myself on video. I haven't even seen the TED talks. But, on Sunday I'm going to watch and live-Tweet the show with Oprah. Join us! I'm @brenebrown and she's @Oprah. You can also follow tweets at @SuperSoulSunday.

I invited some friends and family over and we're going to do brunch and watch. I'm going to write myself another note. This time it will say, Be supportive and kind to yourself. I think I look weird - I'm way more gussied up than normal. I'm sure I'll think of one thousand ways I could have been wiser or wittier. I'll be embarrassed about my gushing.

But you know what? I dared greatly and I can't wait to share it with all of you. This community is what I think about when I'm trying to be brave. So, join us! Host your own brunch - OWN has a great kit here. It even includes the tough Soul-to-Soul questions that Oprah asked me.

There's also a worldwide simulcast - you can get more info here.

Permission to ring bells granted!

I'm sure you were fabulous! I have been a long-time Oprah fan. That woman has taught me more than any other single teacher I've had in my lifetime. I am also a big fan of your work and I'm so excited that the two of you have come together. The message is so good, so necessary. Thank you Brene for all your courage to be vulnerable and brave in front of the rest of us.

WOW! Brene, this is absolutely fabulous. AND, you look amazing...rocking those orange, or are they red, shoes. The entire world needs to hear your message and I will be praying that they do on Sunday. I'm gonna do my best to pass the word. YOUR studies and writings have set me free. Thank you. Blessings and JOY!!! Go get 'em.

Congratulations...you are truly deserving and inspiring! I saw you speak at the Women's Conference in Boston and love your passion. I hope that our paths cross one day and we can share a chat over a cup of tea...my treat!

Be well,
Cheri

Brene,
I had the pleasure of hearing you speak at Furman a few weeks back, and one of my favorite things you said was that "being cool is an emotional straitjacket" and that "there's no movement at all in self protection." As someone who constantly struggles to look like she has it all together, these two statements really resonated with me. So I think I speak for many of us here when I tell you how grateful I am that you gave yourself permission to be 'uncool' and simply showed up as yourself. I think one of the things that draws so many people to you is how real you are. You're not afraid to 'show up and be seen,' potential mistakes be damned, and that inspires people. Immensely.

For what it's worth, though, I think you're one of the coolest 'uncool' people I know ;)

The bells are ringing in Boston!!!!

I LOVE the idea of permission slips. How fabulous is that!!!!! I hope you don't mind if I use it and pass it along to my children.

LOVE you. I am stealing your idea of writing myself (and my clients) permission slips to be goofy, sloppy, etc. You are amazing. Thank you. So happy you're reaching out to so many of us with your pal Oprah!

Congratulations Brene. It is so inspiring to watch you blossom and follow your bliss....just from being yourself. :)

Remember though, Oprah is just another human being....a Soul Sister....once the "star struck" - ness wears off, you will be in good stead....back with your feet on the ground, continuing to do your awesome and amazing work. Keep it up. :) You don't need Oprah, but it doesn't hurt. :) Oh the places you'll go.

So happy for you when I saw the promos! I love LOVE that you gave yourself permission to be almost childlike in your excitement! I want to put a paper like that in my pocket too!
And...good thing you travel with cowboy boots because...they are just so cool. :)

Hi Brene',

So, I'll ring some bells ... loud and long! And, I've already got my VCR set to record the show on Sunday! I'm a regular reader of yours and a regular fan of Super Soul Sunday, so I can't think of a better combination to watch.

I believe your message is so vitally important in it's contribution to the health of our culture and our our collective "sanity" as a society. I am heartened to see it being spread OUT LOUD on ever increasing venues (Sounds True, Katie, PBS, other talk shows, and now Oprah!). Seeing your message (and others like yours) being made so widely visible is encouraging for the hope and sanctity of the present moment and the future that this moment is to become.

With blessings,
Kathryn

I am incredibly excited to see both episodes. The DVR is set to tape just so I don't miss any of it! You are such an inspiration to so many people. I love your authenticity and that is where the relatability comes in for me. Oprah has so many guru's, mystics, and successful role models on her show. I love the teachings, but sometimes feel like I will never reach that status. Somehow the humanness seems missing at times. Then, she chose to have this beautiful breath of fresh air who openly shows us over and over again her fears, and vulnerable spots, and I then can authentically connect and learn, and feel there is hope for me.... because she is just like me! Thank you, Brene! Bless you and the work you do!
