OK. I have an advance copy. I cheated. All I can say is, "I heart Katherine Center." Just click here and pre-purchase your copy so you don't have to stand in line with all of the other people who will want to get their hands on this wise and funny book! Honesty, humor and great writing is an amazing combination.

Three brothers raised singing tent revival songs hook up with their first cousin and make some serious old-school music with a very fresh sound. I'm totally addicted. iTunes shows their "influencers" as Tom Petty, Neil Young and The Allman Bros. I also hear The Call (my fav). Careful in the car with the kids (the tent rivival days are long gone). Thanks to Ash & Lauren for the recommendation.

blogging for change!

What happens when 60 amazing graduate social work students get together to study shame, explore compassion, spread hope, and learn how to blog for social change?  More than I ever could have imagined.

During our summer course, the students formed groups based on their interests and each group had two weeks to create and launch a blog that included components on shame resilience, social justice, and education. Fewer than 10 of the students had any blogging experience and 2/3 of the students had never even seen a blog. These wise and wonderful groups blew my mind! Some of the blogs were developed for helping professionals, others are more targeted to the public. Check them out by topic!

Heart & Hope - Terminal Illness

Veterans Pushing Light

GLBT - Building Alliances

Male Body Image

What If? Behavioral Health

Divorce

Growing Pains - Puberty

Self Injurious Behaviors

Immigration

Hospice

For an extra credit project, students created over 200 hope notes and seed bombs. They spread the love all over Houston. Here's a video of the kind and generous students from our summer class!

to rwanda with love, hope and GIRL power

2397309623_e7eef27f34.jpg

If you've ever read or heard about the atrocities in Rwanda and asked, "What can I do?"  I have an answer for you!

My dear friend, Jen Lemen, is planning an amazing trip to Rwanda to spread hope and share a wonderful book that she wrote with her friend, Odette! She needs our help. Please visit her blog, learn about the trip and do what you can to support her - $1, $5, a prayer or a wish! If you need a little inspiration about the powerful intersection of hope and girls, here's the video I made from Ellen's hope note party! Just imagine a global effort to empower girls and spread hope!

have hope, then spread it around

hopenote.jpg

When I first came to SquareSpace, I stumbled across Krystyn Heide's blog (although I'm sure it wasn't an accident). I loved it. One day I read about her leaving hopeful messages for strangers in New York. I was inspired. Within a few weeks, her idea took on a life of its own - as inspiring ideas often do. Today, I find myself fully engaged in her revolution - hopeREVO - a revolution of hope. I can't think of a better cause than spreading hope.

Ellen and I had our first mother-daughter book club meeting on Saturday. It was so fun! We all read The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. In the book, Sara, the main character, finds herself poor, hungry and struggling against hopelessness. Ultimately, it is acts of kindness between strangers that changes her outlook.

To celebrate the power of hope, all of the girls made their own hope notes to scatter anonymously around Houston. We asked them to write a note that reflected what they might like to hear from someone if they felt sad or hopeless. We were so moved and impressed by their insight and generosity.Check out our little hopeREVOhouston video (it helps to let it load so hit play then pause, wait a minute, then hit play again).

Ellen and I have started leaving our notes in random places and it feels great. I guess you'll never know what, if any, effect the notes have on people, but I know that putting hope out in the world matters. Thanks to Krystyn for starting the revolution and to Alex and Robin for including us in the book club! I'll get pics up to the hopeREVO flickr site this week!
